Why use John?

Having taught at St Edwards for 14 years I am able to teach A Level and IB Maths at the standard and higher levels and IGCSE/GCSE.

My teaching capability in this regard is not just about understanding the content, which is obviously essential, but it is more subtle and equally important.

It includes the following:

  • Quickly being able to see the strengths and weaknesses of any Tutee. This could be in how they approach their learning, lay out their work, checking, etc.
  • Having a really deep understanding of the Maths. This is through having to explain many processes, seeing the same mistakes being regularly made and trying different approaches at answering many questions.
  • An ability to make the subject relevant and interesting. Maths can be a ‘dry’ subject and the last thing and tutee needs is a monotone, repetitive and one-dimensional teacher.
  • Exceptional ability to answer any exam question in as simple and straightforward a way as possible so that it is easy for students to remember and repeat.
  • For A level, I know
    • all the applied modules
    • the new Pearson syllabus well, including how to use the calculator (usually the Casio f-CG50)
    • the Formulae Book and the large data set.
  • For IB, I know
    • their approach to exams and questions, which is not the same as A Level.
    • the difference between SL and HL and AA and AI
    • how to use the two most used calculators, Casio f-CG50 and TI-inspire
    • how to approach completing a successful IA (the Project).
  • For IGCSE/GCSE, I have many years’ experience, teaching all abilities. Having experienced much of what students struggle with in my 13 years of teaching, I have been able to develop many different teaching approaches and am able to tailor any lessons to suit the needs of each student.
  • Lastly, I am good at reacting quickly to the pace, ability and requirements of each individual student.
